One of My Favorite Sketchers

There was a man who had this gift
he’d rhyme his story with quite the rift
Nipsey Russell was his name
I watched him perform, enjoying his fame
Not many know the story behind
the sort of things that made him go prime
He got his start with quite the hustle
as a carhop he made his customers chuckle
He hit the club scene and cut some wax
you could set the needle to get some laughs
Back in those days if you wanted to be known
you wanted to get on the Ed Sullivan show
Following his stint he ended up on Jack Paar
from that moment on he went very far
Whenever I heard he would be on TV
I’d be sure to be sitting, elbows on knees
From Martin to Carson to many more jobs
he made us all laugh and forget any sobs
The game shows took him on and gave him the prime
to engage the viewers with all of his rhymes
As time goes on and he last took a breath
the thing called cancer led to his death
He’s scattered in the Atlantic Ocean it’s true
leaving laughter in the air as the current suits you

RIP Nipsey Russell may your gift of rhyme
always last, all the time

…..
There you go! This is day #21 of National Poetry Month.
Thanks to Robert Lee Brewer’s Poetic Asides blog I have another prompt:
“For today’s prompt, write a sketch poem. My initial thought is to write a poem that’s like a sketch of a moment or an object. But you can play around with sketchy people or situations. Or just sketch something else together.”

When Darkness Comes

When Darkness Comes

When darkness comes
I hear the constant thunder
and sleep betrayed
when by my endless wonder
I hear the storm
in walls that hold the secrets
there may be harm
and this is why I seem slept
Behold the day
when sunshine beats the hollows
when I feel safe
from hearing endless blows
Sleep well my love
don’t let the noises stir you
for up above
sunny days will be true
Be still my heart
as evening starts to fall
it’s sure to start
in darkness we all wallow

…..

So there you have it! My poem #20 for National Poetry Month

Thanks to Robert Lees Brewer’s Poetic Asides Prompt:

“For today’s prompt, write a dark poem. Cave poems, poems at night, and no electricity poems–these are all appropriate for today’s prompt. Of course, dark has several other connotations as well. An underdog is often known as a dark horse, a villain may have a dark heart, and Batman is known as the Dark Knight. Heck, when I was little, I thought Darth Vader was Dark Vader.”

Driver’s License

Driver’s License

I was late in life
to get a driver’s license
21, I believe
When we were teenagers
we could not drive the car
as Daddy put it
“it’s my livelihood”
made sense to me
Jealous, a little bit
of others who drove the family car
I was in a world of tractor drivers
farm kids
they had to drive to work the farms
long before their legal age
Daddy was not a farmer
he was an office man
after he was a NCO
and even some then
Maybe I was just as well off
if I had worked the farm
all the crops would have died
No green thumb here
and I have my driver’s license
So it all worked out
And I learned the value of walking
which has served me well
Win:Win

So there you have it! That’s #19 of National Poetry Month
Thanks for Robert Lee Brewer’s Poetic Asides Prompt:
For today’s prompt, write a license poem. There are many different licenses available to people. Fishing license, driver’s license, license to plate, license to kill, and marriage license. Poem doesn’t have to be about the license, but it could mention a license, happen at a licensing office, or well, use your poetic license.

Ten Things of Thankful – Easter Time

Jodi
Jodi and Easter Eggs from 2018

It’s that time again to think of all the wonderful things of which to be grateful. It’s also Easter and that’s always special. Let’s just hop to it!

1. April 15 is past!! WOOHOO!!

2. Daughter is here for a few days and enjoying her being here and super duper news is that she was recognized for all the years she has been a volunteer at the thrift store. Here she is in all her smilyness!!
Jodi

3. I made the cut!! Read about it HERE Serious Flash Fiction accepted my piece for their anthology. Thanks to D. Avery for sharing about this and for also being included. She has been doing wonderful works with her blog!

4. I’m still staying consistent with Six Sentence Story. Here’s my latest:
Every 1000 Miles I’ve already edited it a couple of times.

5. Oh my goodness!! National Poetry Month is keeping me honest! So far, I have written a poem every day. One rule I have is that it has to be in the raw, with very little editing. If I catch something later, I can change it. It’s more about discipline than perfection. Here’s the last one from yesterday. I’m doing today’s after this blog post. Little Did I Know

6. The weather has been amazing!! It’s supposed to storm today, but it’s been nice enough to do some walking. I don’t go far, but I enjoy the fresh air. Pollen has been snarky, but it’s better now.

7. The after tax season two days off were lovely and we went Putt-Putting. There were several families out there! I think school must be out for the week.

8. Book Club coming! Our community is going to start a book club. It was one of my suggestions and they are going for it! WOOHOO!!

9. Interview with a poet. Last week, I interviewed a fellow poet at the clubhouse. It has been years since I have done anything like this. I do know that I would not want to do this on a regular basis because of stress, but I enjoyed this one as it was pretty much a conversation. I admire the work of this lady and here’s the video: Interview with Aruna Gurumurthy

10. I have been doing a series about the Muse. Here’s the last one I posted and I have another in the process. It’s been a fun project. My sister has often given me ideas and although she is on the other side of the veil, I still hear her musing me. Last night I had a dream and she decided in the dream to go spend some time with another family member. I suppose I should share her, but I hope she comes back soon.

Every 1000 Miles

Every 1000 Miles

Throwing the wrench to the gravel, Gloria wiped oily sweat from her brow, glared at Autrey and cried, “I’m just not getting this figured out, what’s the point if I keep doing this wrong?”

Chawing on his last wad of tobacco, Autrey spat out a bit, winked at his bride, and spoke, “Aww Glo, baby, you knows how to do this, just give yourself another chance, you’ve helped me many times, I know you got this.”

Sucking in a deep breath, then swigging her sweet tea, Gloria scratched her greased up nose and squatted by the pickup, “I just can’t seem to get that filter loose, it usually comes right off, I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.”

“Lemme check somethin’, baby,” Crouching down on the ground, Autrey peered under the truck and looked around, sliding underneath on the tarp, he tapped around the filter and it came right off; All knowing that Gloria didn’t see him take the filter off, he slightly set it so it would easily come off, “it’s looking okay, babe, just give it another try, sometimes these things can be stubborn.”

Sliding back under the pickup, Gloria got the filter undone and completed the oil change, with no more hitches; gleaming at the thought of a job well done, she grinned at Autrey and said, “it just needed your magic touch, honey, thank you.”

And so it went every so often until it was time; allowing for the pain and resolution of life’s span they bantered over changing the oil, every 1,000 miles; until Gloria was on her own, when she changed the oil on the old pickup, she heard a tap, tap, tap and Autrey saved her, one more time.
