Ten Things of Thankful 1-26-2026

My mother Thelma Laverne Hall Tomey in 1977 and my sister Paula Annette Tomey Allen holding a painting by my niece Kayla Doiron Wygal

It’s TTOT time and it would be unforgivable to myself to skip past this month. It’s a month of months and especially special to me as it’s my mother’s birthday month. Although she crossed over several long years ago, she lives in my heart every single day. It is also the month that my sister crossed over too soon. It is most fitting to place them side by side in this image window.

My sister, being four years my senior, took it to her responsibility to mother me, especially after mom passed away. Paula and I were always close, even when we weren’t, and loved each other as sisters do. Mom taught me about the life of a kind, sensitive soul who always put others before herself. She didn’t do so with words, although her storytelling was to be admired, especially the humorous stories, she moreso did this with examples. There were times, especially later in her life, when mom would have been crying over someone she was concerend about. We would talk it over and connect with the tenderness she held in her heart. I am most grateful for both of these women and wish I could sit with them. To be honest, though, I have talked to both of them since they have gone – not face to face, by spirit to spirit. When alone, my words may slip from my mouth. It’s my time to share with them and I hold it as precious. I do this with others, as well, but these two are my focus today.

Mom always like the colors of green and gold. She’s wearing a gold dress in this photo which means she was going somewhere special. It was likely that she was going out dancing with daddy. They danced often and were reminiscent of famous ballroom dancers. Daddy always said that it was mom who took the prize for dancing and he followed her lead. I am grateful that we got to go dancing with them, espcially at the NCO club on family dinner night. I did not inherit these ballroom dancing skills, but could cut a pretty good, fast dance rug. How I wish mom would have been a cancer survivor and lived longer. I am grateful for the time we had and to be able to be present.

The striped dress meant I was going to the NCO club with my siblings and parents. The shorts picture was when I was about 13 and goofing around dancing in the living room. I am pretty sure that my sister was taking the picture and likely dancing with me. The what would have been me in a red dress that belonged to my sister, was my first Valentine’s dance in 7th grade. I had a computer selected date from a fund raising event at the junior high. While I was matched and was supposed to meet him at the dance, he showed up with his own date. While I didn’t like the idea, I was relieved. I danced up a storm, so to speak, taking over the dance floor in the twist contest. I suppose that I learned early in life, that dancing it off was the way to go. I am grateful for the attitude that saved my embarrassment. Fun fact: My sister styled my hair and put makeup on me. We dyed her red dress to make it even more red. From vigorous dancing, I came home with red on the white blouse, under my arms. Another event to laugh off.

November 2013 Paula and Lisa at the hair salon. We had to get a picture with our fresh dos. It was a couple of years later when we would last see each other. I am grateful that we had this time together. Although we had the cancer challenge (she never wanted it called a battle but a belief that cancer would take a flight away) it did mean spending time together we may not otherwise have had. The cancer did go away. And I am grateful for the time we had.

That’s what I have for TTOT time this week. Blessings and Peace to you all.

Just a side note: This is Cancer Talk Week

The Spirit of Music Plays On

Piano Image by MartyNZ on Pixabay

The Spirit of Music Plays On

As I look at the tan shaded keys of the piano

Crackled dingey and peeling

Melodies are now memories

Of the time when elegance was about tea and piano time

When we all dressed proper and sang deep from the soul

Just as when we faced the hurricanes

We gathered at the farm

Secured the property

Gathered by the waiting piano

Until the master touched the keys

And all worries of wind and rain

Were belted out to calm the storms

And we survived

Our dear piano survived

Always leaving us with peace

Each day was another day of hope

Ballads and nursery tunes alike

Grew the spirit

Another moment to survive

Another moment to love

And as we faced the pandemic

The old soul piano was still there with us

Some have passed on

But the music remained

It comforted us as we once again gathered

And realized that all the riches of the world

Could not do more than the riches of knowing

We had each other

We still had music

We still had soul

Looking at the old piano

Abandoned by time and loss

I leave a yellow rose of joy

For time has leant more than anything else

And I am grateful for the song

The cardinal represents those we have lost coming back to visit. We lost two fans of Saint Louis Cardinals, our nephews Keith – whose birthday is today – and Michael, whose birthday is in March. Keith is shown here playing his guitar and Michael at the Cardinal’s stadium. We were blessed to have these two in our lives and they are truly missed.

Ten Things of Thankful – January 24, 2020

That’s right, folks! It’s January 24 and a FRIYAY! So time for Ten Things of Thankful or TTOT!! So, let’s do this!

1. Mom! This would be her 97th birthday year! WOW! On January 20, 1923 God brought this woman into the world and in 1954 I got to meet her! How lucky was I? The luckiest baby in the world, but I am partial to my mother. While she did not get to stay on this part of life long enough, I am grateful for having her for a mother, who I always called “Mom.”

2. Paul, my cousin, who passed away this past week. I am grateful that when I was last back visiting in Iowa that we got to see him. He is now with his beloved Sally and the rest of the family on the other side. I am sure he is talking away as he loved to chat up a storm. Rest well, Paul, you were always one I could count on to make me smile.

3. Learning – I have been learning so much from fellow people in many walks of life, but this week I want to feature Deanna Martinez-Bey, a writer, cook and fellow blogger. Here is one of her blogs The Fiery Whisk Bakery. I am reading one of her books and it’s making me hungry!

4. Walking – I have had some difficulty with walking and weeble wobbles, so I devised a way to walk indoors. I am “trying” to increase my cardio without going kerplunk! I did get to the gym and use the bike on the weekend, but I am trying this in home walking routine and so far, so good. One day at a time, right? I am thinking of trying this video again as it helped me before:

5. This spot is for you!! That’s right! I decided to meet you in the middle, so why not take the steps to join the party? Here’s the link to join us! Even one thankful is perfectly fine!

6. Opportunities – I was having a discussion with my friend about how wherever you look, wherever you go, there are always opportunities to reach out and help others. We had that experience yesterday at the Dollar Tree, helping a lady who needed to find the right color flowers. And in the Living Poetry prompt “Service” was the theme. So, would you like to see the responses? you might see mine, oh yes you might or may… Living Poetry Monday Prompt

7. Glasses – I was at the blogger’s meetup and my friend and fellow blogger, Missy, had glasses to give us and I got a pair for my daughter. They are pink! Maybe she will model them when she gets them. Thank you, Missy!! Here’s Missy’s blog: Midlife Margaritas

8. Humor – So, I had a little fun this week with Medium. On Friday on post on the Friday Fix and respond to the prompt of the week. See what I did here and tell me if it made you giggle: Put the Seat Down

9. And many years ago I walked on water! Oh yes I did! It was ICE water, so there is that factor… Grateful I survived and that my partner in this did not fall in, that time… Here’s the story: Walking Across the Mississippi River

10. A Warm Bed – Not all people get to choose where they will live. Unless you call choosing between sleeping under the stars or in a tent a choice, then, there’s that, but I know I can lay my head on a pillow in a heated home. What made me think about this moreso this week was when I was driving and saw a tent pitched next to a fence. I am supposing that someone slept or was still sleeping in that tent. It is cold outside, even though in NC we joke about how that changes by the hour, it is cold and to have to sleep in a tent must be hard. Yes, I have slept in a tent on cold nights, but I was camping by choice. I had a campfire and I had warm sleeping gear, but it was fun for me. I cannot imagine that this person had a campfire or heat and yet they chose to pitch a tent and even take that risk near a busy road. I don’t know anything about this person. I don’t know their story. But I do know it is cold and I am grateful I am not having to sleep in a tent when I would not want to do so.
