Delilah viewed the carefully placed bricks on the pavement, walked on for many decades at the palace grounds, the history being that these bricks were installed by labor much like those of slaves, although it was not clear if these were actual bricks placed by slaves.
Edward pondered the history, about how this beautiful arrangement came about and set out to research the facts, delving into the stories from several sources, still uncertain which of these stories were true or where the gray area was; It became a mash up of many words, none certain to be true.
Solving the question about the origin of the bricklayers was a dilemma both Delilah and Edward faced and both agreed on one thing: regardless of the history, the crafting of these bricks was beautiful and skillfully accomplished and both appreciated the fine quality.
Intricacy being what it is, it’s probably safe to say that slavery was involved in creating the many pathways, looking at the dates of installation and the known history of those times it’s probable that there were slaves used in the making of these walkways; Interesting, is that there were free people of African American ancestry who lived and worked in the region, while slavery was still occurring.
Great stories come from the history, even if muddied, of the time these bricks were placed and ever since; Tourists come from all over to learn of the history and pay their respects to the area, complicated by the varied versions of the same story, each pointing a different direction, but all the same, stories of the past.
Needless to say, but saying just the same, it’s important to research stories and keep an open mind to the possibilities that historical research will always have gray areas, no matter how much a scholar claims to know the facts; Such is the case, even today, as when you inquire about current events and hear several versions of the same event, much based on one person’s point of view versus another’s; So it is important to understand the need to document that which is factual and, goodness knows, the facts are often based on empirical research versus theory so it’s hard to gain any true designs of what is real and what is not, meaning there is no black or white, only more shades of gray; Going back to the design of the bricks, the answer is: Who Knows? And the question becomes: Does the beauty of the brickwork change with the history of the laying of the bricks?; And that, my friend, raises more questions.

2. Inktober! It’s keeping me on task to do a post every day to respond to the themes. I am grateful for the opportunity to use my drawing skillz and to allow myself to fumble. “Ah yes, this merlot has notes of chocolate and cherries, with a hint of pecan, I would dare say, it is chewy, mimicking the best of the rich reds, I would highly recommend this with your filet mignon, sir.”
Jacques charmed the men and women alike at Cassidy’s Fine Dining Company, at the beach, popular with the most elite class of patrons; Little did they know that Jacques had no real knowledge of a sommelier, but he had the ability to make just about anything believable.
When asked to taste the wine for its tartness, Jacques would take the glass to his lips, appear to sip and nod, watching the eyes all on him, checking for his reaction: “This one tastes delicious and I would highly recommend it, but please taste, to be certain, as my palate may not be as clear as your own.”
As Jacques passed by each table, assisting customers with their choices, he noticed a certain attractive woman who seemed to follow him with her eyes; pacing over to her side he offered to assist with her choice of wine, to which she responded that she did not imbibe in alcoholic beverages, but would love a Shirley Temple; Smiling at the lady, Jacques ordered her drink and moved on past her, only to catch a note pinched between her delicate fingers and passed into his hand, where nobody could see; As soon as Jacques was out of sight of the patrons, he opened the note which read: “I am on to you, meet me in 30 minutes on the deck.”
The jazz notes were rising into the ambience of the night as the chatter of diners picked up and about 30 minutes after the interaction, Jacques moved to the deck area, where there were just a few diners and a walkway, shadowed by a pergola; “I am glad you stepped out with me; There is something I need done and I think you are the man to take care of it; I need a master of deception to help me carry out my plan to escape from here,” Jacques struggled out of pure confusion, when the lady continued, “You see I am in danger if I stay with my companion as he will bring me great harm, I can tell by the things he is saying and how he treats me, and I don’t want to be harmed, so I need a way out; Do you think you can help me?”
After the lady found her place at the table, Jacques motioned to the piano player to play dance music; Encouraging the patrons to dance was an easy task for Jacques as he would gently take the hand of the eldest lady at a table and invite her to dance, rarely getting resistance, as he was such a gentleman, this was usually followed by others stepping up to join on the dance floor; True to his plan, Jacques was successful at getting the dance started; Once the lady was on the dance floor with her date, Jacques bumped into the couple and apologetically took the lady by the hand to which she responded by dancing with him; Her dance partner found his way back to his seat where he drank and was heavily partaking of the rich wine; After steering the lady to the lobby area, she found her way to escape, leaving one thing behind: her handbag.
