Struggle

Entering her zip code, Elaine focused on the task at hand, knowing it was the most important job for which she would apply.

Counting the change in the bottom of her purse, Barbara placed the coins in stacks, realizing she had just enough for a round trip bus fare to the interview.

Entering the code in the key pad of her office, Jasmine knew she would have some heavy decision making to make about who she would hire for her personal assistant.

Calling the doctor’s office, Elaine entered the code which ensured it authenticated her, only to hear the answer she needed to know, the news, if bad, would be a nurse and the phone redirected to the nursing department.

Barbara walked into Jasmine’s office, ready as she could be for the job interview, she had a job, but she needed to supplement her income, due to the high bills from her husband’s medical treatments; Keeping him always in the back of her mind, after the funeral, she knew he would be there in spirit.

Elaine hung up the phone, went to her computer, emailed to Jasmine’s office, confirming her appointment, she needed this job more than ever, but she also knew it would offer her no promises in her life.

Fired Up

First, he saw the email with the subject line: Fired
Immediately perspiring, drenched with dread, he opened it
Relief came quickly when he realized the truth
Evidently, there was a typo with what was meant to be said on that subject line
Delayed office hours today are because of a fire in the break room, all staff are to come    in at noon for a lesson on fire safety
Ulysses was relieved with the news until he remembered the charred bagel he tossed in    the trash when he left the night before
Pressure built in the back of his head as he started his day

Fare Thee Well

It was a sad state of affairs for Harvey Funknell when he departed from the company, cardboard box scrunched under one arm and his briefcase slung over his shoulder.

Hailing a cab was a feat since his arms were occupied, but he had the skill of a powerful whistle and could catch the attention of a cab driver.

Fumbling with his haul, Harvey fell into the cab with his box and case and stared into the front seat, dazed when he recognized what the driver was asking about where he was going.  “I’ve already been to hell today, so let’s just take me home, where I’m sure I will catch more of the same.”

The cabby looked in Harvey’s eyes, seeing how watery and glazed they were, like a shocked, sad old dog; Shifting the gears of the machine, the driver took off to the destination of Harvey’s home and engaged in a long conversation about the woes of the city and kept Harvey connected the whole way.

They arrived at Harvey’s home and the driver hopped out of the cab and helped Harvey with his box, walking him to the door, reaching for his wallet, Harvey asked the driver how much he owed to which the driver said “No fare today, my meter isn’t working, have a nice rest of your day, buddy,” and he took off.

Padded – An Acrostic

Placing the filling in the pouch, she holds it in the palm of her hand.

Asking if it feels natural to her friend, she hands it over to the waiting woman.

Doubts run through her mind as she worries that this tender moment will cause her friend dismay.

Delighted with the weight and texture, her friend nods approval with a big smile.

Elated on one side of her emotions, saddened on the other, less seen, side of her emotions, she grins and moves in for a hug.

Dejected since the operation, she held her friend, gently at first before tightly gathering her close, knowing that only a true friend would understand and allow her heart to fill, true friendship is never padded with false intentions.

Baby Time

Bursting in the door, Charmagne hollered, “bring on the party, your girl’s here!”

Slamming the pen down on my desk, shaking my head, looking at her, “Charmagne, can’t you, for once, just come in like a normal person, quietly polite?”

“Heck no, I gotta tell you something right now, it won’t hold no more.”

Rolling my eyes into focus, “What is it then, let’s have it.”

“I just came from the doctor and guess who’s gonna have a baby?”

With dropped jaw my question about who’s the daddy met this reply: “As far as I can tell it’s the rottweiler down the block, the one that keeps jumping the fence and messing with dear old Daisy beagle.”
