Refuse to Believe Anything But the Truth

Relief was not for Beth, watching out the window, seeing nobody to help her.
Everybody had other things to do and, while she understood, her heart would ache.
Family and friends alike wished her well as she cared for her mother without staff.
Undermining comments were a source of disdain, coming from the critical milieu.
Simply ignoring this was not easy, but Beth refused such and stayed in focus.
Everybody came for show at the end of it all, Beth left with her own peace.

Cardinal Dreams – Six Sentence Story

Gathering up his son’s clothes, tossed about the bedroom floor, Daniel looked at his slumbering son as he lay with his ball glove secured in hand and his signed baseball had rolled off onto the blanket. Hair tousled in rings of curls, Jeffrey slumbered away with little boy dreams.

It was not long before this night, that Daniel and Jeffrey were spectators at their very first St. Louis Cardinals baseball game, a dream realized when Jeffrey’s grandparents surprised him with the tickets on his birthday, Daniel was even more excited than Jeffrey and immediately made plans for the big event.

Quietly, Daniel lay all of Jeffrey’s clothes out for the next day, before leaving his room and preparing for his own day to come, packing lunches, paying bills, making sure there was nothing left undone before embarking on their journey.

“Batter, batter,” chanted by the fans, they expected Albert Pujols to hit a homer each time he stood, ready to give it his all, having watched him play, religiously, Daniel enlisted his sidekick, Jeffrey, as part of the fan base of their home.

Falling into a deep sleep, partly from exhaustion and partly from having it all to do, Daniel drifted into a dream state, deeper than he had known in a long time, perhaps since she was by his side, before, well, before, she drifted off and didn’t wake up; Daniel dreamed that he was sitting at Busch Stadium, Tiffany by his side and Jeffrey on her lap, watching the pre-game activities, he looked in her eyes and grinned, bouncing Jeffrey on her knee, Tiffany smiled back, winking and then looked at their son as he babbled in baby talk, having a gleeful time.

Waking from his sleep, Daniel wiped the tears from his eyes, then got up to check on Jeffrey, who was still soundly sleeping; Placing his hand on his son’s warm head, he said a prayer and went back to bed, thinking about that wink and how someday he would find her again by his side.

Ten Things of Thankful – September 6

Good Morning! It’s that time again for TTOT and without further adieu, let’s get the party started.

It’s important to me to have an attitude of gratitude, but if that means I force myself to think positive all of the time, then that’s not my way. I have times when thinking one positive thought is a strain. What I do try to do is find ways around the muckedy muck of life and see there is something for which to be grateful. In light of the hurricane and lives lost, it’s hard to think this way. And then one of my good friends just lost her son of 29 years and that’s just so young to leave this world. Where’s the gratitude in that? Well, I can say this: I am grateful for Go Fund Me to help my dear friend pay for the funeral of her son as she did not have the funds to do so. And her agency put in a substantial amount of money to help. So, I guess that’s my #1 Thankful.

2. Resources for Hurricane survivors. It’s devastating to start over after losing everything. I am grateful for all the relief organizations along with the good neighbors who help in so many ways.

3. Swimming Lessons – Daughter started her swim lessons this week and I was able to attend and watch as she learned techniques to help her swim better.

4. Nerves – That’s right! I had to muster up my nerves to deal with a very delicate situation, advocating for someone else’s rights. It irked me, to put it simply, that someone would think they could treat somebody like a second class citizen and I hope I nipped it in the bud.

5. Poetry – Whenever I am perplexed about expression I turn to my most familiar friend of poetry. Here’s my latest For the Bahamas

6. Six Sentence Story – Denise is such a dear heart to keep us well supplied with word prompts and to provide a place for expression and I am so grateful for her. Here’s my latest: Zoned Out and In I hope my characters will be able to express gratitude from the outcome.

7. Poundage is still slipping off. I have lost 8.5 # this summer and an additional pound this week. I am most grateful for having the ability to lose. Not everybody is able to do so.

8. Challenges – I have a project I am working on and it officially starts on Tuesday. I passed the test yesterday and the materials are HARD! I am grateful for challenges to my brain even when it feels explodable.

9. Submission – I submitted my manuscript for my poetry book and it’s still hard to me to believe I did this. It’s been a long time in the making and it’s gone, now out of my hands and it just feels weird.

10. Volunteers – A good friend has volunteered to help with organizing daughter’s room and it’s looking much improved.

Now, it’s your turn to add to the list. What’s happening in your gratitude zone?

Zoned Out and In – Six Sentence Story

Clarence Charleston zoned out when the teacher told the class they would have to place their pencils on their desks as time was up.
Taking up the test papers, the teacher looked at Clarence’s blank paper, other than his name, and sighed.
Clancy Charleston looked at his son and shrugged his shoulders, “he takes after me, I s’pose,” he said to Mrs. Darling, Clarence’s teacher, who observed both Mr. Charleston and his son were shifting in their seats and blushing.
Mrs. Darling looked at father and son and spoke of their resemblance, how their features were so much alike and it’s only natural that they would have some of the same styles, so, “why don’t we look at some programs to put the two of you together so Clarence can learn more about writing, Mr. Charleston, and I would love to see the two of you come back in, let’s say, six weeks.”
Looking up at Mrs. Darling, Mr. Charleston nudged Clarence with his elbow, “hey, son, let’s think about this one, okay, ‘cause Mrs. Darling believes in you, so what do you have to say about it?”
“Sounds to me like we could get in the right zone for sure, pop, let’s do this and thanks Mrs. Darling.”

The Howler – Six Sentence Story

Howler
An Acrostic
Hershel Henry Spritzer was an academic genius as he scored the highest in his class and was a shoe in to become the valedictorian.

Orange was the least loved color of Constance Spritzer and she would avoid placing this anywhere on her paintings, masterpieces which would hang in only the finest of galleries; it had to do with her heart breaking, ex boyfriend, Jasper Jester, who wore only orange and black striped outfits.

Wondering why his mother expressed discord with his winning of the Orange County Esteemed Scholar Award, Hershel sent her a message with Fergly, his owl, serving as the messenger.

Lingering slowly though the skies, Fergly dipped frequently, not daring to hoot, as he held securely the heavy red envelope in his beak, talons ready to drop and land on Hershel’s windowsill.

Eagerly, Hershel grabbed the envelope from Fergly, but then he stopped, and placed it on the table, feeling anxious because the envelope was not only large, but it was red and it was scooting across the table where it lay, this could only mean one thing.

Ready or not, Hershel knew he needed to open the envelope for fear it might explode and open it he did, easing it as best that he could, noticing some orange paint dripping as he did, but the worse part was the ear piercing, exploding howling all about the meaning of the color of orange (it wasn’t Jasper).
