It was time for vaccinations to prevent severe illness or even death. Excited when he heard it was vaccination time, Chris put his favorite technological toys in his carry all bag and loaded up the car.

“It’s vaccination day,” Chris excitedly announced. His mother gave him a surprised look, before getting in the van and driving him to the clinic. Chris had a shocked expression as he sat, watching the nurse prepare the long, thin needle, soon to enter his arm. Smiling, he exclaimed, “Oh I get it, we have to get shots so we don’t get sick on vacation.”

Who Would be Your Hero?

Epic poems speak of heroics, perhaps historical or not. If writing an epic poem of this day and age, I would have to focus on first responders. This could be the military, police, EMTs, fire persons, Coast Guard, for example. How would you define the one hero in the epic poem? This would be a dilemma as it’s not one person who is often the hero, but a team. Who would you choose for an epic poem subject for this day?

There you have it, my six sentence story. Here’s how it works:

When Crystals Melt

Looking out the crystal covered window, Maizie moved to the fireplace and added what was left of the split logs, wondering where the next would come from. As the house began to warm, she placed the pot over the fire and warmed yesterdays leftover oatmeal, adding a little more water to make it stretch. Chopping up the apples from this year’s harvest, she placed them in the bowls for her family. As each child started waking, stirring slowly, wrapped in tattered quilts, threaded by many mends over many years, Maizie held her arms open and welcome each one to warm them with her love. After each child took their places at the table, they looked to their mother and bowed together. “Dear Lord, it is with whole hearts and welcoming souls that we are most grateful for our many blessings,” And then the door opened, he had returned from his hunt and they would soon know no hunger.

Hope in the Desert

He moved to Needles, searching his soul, pining for his lost woman, she had left him right before Christmas eve.

Needless to say, his heart was broken, and he pondered the true meaning of life.

There was a sound in the distance, gaining volume as the sound of huffing and bells rang near.

Looking to the sky, noticing golden blades, shining brightly and hooves of tiny antlered animals, he was amazed.

Then the sounds of “Ho, ho, ho.” rang in his ears.

Gazing at the cactus and watching in amazement as the sleigh swooped down to land, he was once again revived to memories of his childhood, when life felt innocent and hope sprang in the daylight, and at this thought the smell of the pine trees overcame his senses and he was once again renewed to the meaning of hope.

This is in response to the Six Sentence Story prompt: Pine. Won’t you join in?
