First Meeting – Claiming the Heart

Barton claimed Belinda in his heart the first time he set eyes on her at elementary school, when she came to class, all of nine years old, the new girl in the camp, just a few doors down from his home.

While some boys teased her just for being new, Barton just watched her move, ever so gracefully, as she sat at her desk, ready to pay attention to the teacher.

Studious, she was, and Barton was hoping he would get a chance to talk to her without sounding as behind as he was with his studies.

He had reasons, and she would figure that out eventually, but he didn’t care so much about that as he did about getting a chance to impress this beautiful red-haired girl with braids and freckles bouncing off her cheeks when she smiled.

Noticing that reading made Belinda smile, he opened his reader and with one eye on her he attempted to learn the words.

Sensing the feeling of heat on the back of her neck, Belinda looked around and spotted Barton looking at her, smiling; She nodded, and he nodded back, red faced but ever so pleased that she did not grimace.

Home is Where the Heart is Planted

Planting a kiss on her moistly, beaded forehead, he sleepily, quietly stole to the door, ever so careful not to wake his bride.

Love has no words for the feelings for his wife and her feelings for him, as expressive as the day is long without the need to speak as much as show.
As she stirred in the morning light, she realized she had fallen so deeply and he had already gone to his early shift, always thinking of her and her need for rest.

Nestling back in the bed and reaching for his pillow, she breathed in his aroma of the sweet lavender she always put in his bath. Reaching for her swollen belly, she held her hand over her navel and whispered, “Sweet baby, soon you will know this man, the one who took root in my soul, the one who you will call daddy, for your love will be that strong, I just know as I feel it growing each day when you hear his voice.”

Taking her soft robe and wrapping the ties, she takes to the cold floor, welcome to her warmth, and does the thing she does each day, focusing on taking care of her home for the three souls who take up residence, well four, really because of Clement the hound, they are all planted, invested in the home’s hearth.

Cause for Change

As the table was set up beautifully with candles and the waiter brought appetizers, Cassidy was shifting feet under the table, to the point where the tablecloth was shaking in their lap. Looking in Pat’s eyes, Cassidy nervously leaned forward, taking Pat’s hand and started to ask the most important question, box in pocket with the other hand surrounding the silky cover. At this point, a text popped up on Pat’s phone and they stopped looking at Cassidy and checked their phone. Cassidy placed their hand on their lap and silently watched as Pat returned a few texts. Cassidy went to the jewelry store to exchange their gift for something more appropriate for Pat.

True Hearts are Never Absent

Absent

Alone was how she felt, regardless of his presence.
Betrayal felt strong as his eyes averted to the screens.
Somebody else seemed to occupy his focus more.
Every time she looked his way, his eyes were glistening.
Not understanding, she started looking for other signs.
Time ran out when she saw them thinking they were alone.

Trust

Absent from the days and nights
Although she saw his distant gaze
Nothing more to realize

And when she saw him, she would sigh
It seemed he would be gone for days
Absent from the days and nights

Even though he’d be in sight
His distance made him seem away
Nothing more to realize

As he’d bother not with lies
It was clear no more dismay
Absent from the days and nights

When she saw him hold her tight
He was bound to walk away
Nothing more to realize

He looked at her and said goodbye
When he left her on that day
Absent from the days and nights
Nothing more to realize

Assuming

As she slept peacefully, he admired her, happy she was all in.
Believing in them, he could not wait to say: I do.
Selecting her gift, he wanted something of memorium.
Enlisting the aid of his work mate, she knew what to do.
Not spoiling the surprise, discreetly, he met her at a bar.
Taking the gift for his wife, giving a hug, he went home.

…..

I did a triple focus on the same theme for the Six Sentence Story challenge.

The first is an acrostic of the word “Absent”

The second is a villanelle using “Absent” and the first time I have written in this form.

The last is an acrostic of “Absent” and if you look closely, there is another message vertically given at the end of each line. It’s not really a double acrostic, but just another play with words.

I was going for the effect of the last acrostic pulling the conclusion together.

Thank you to Denise for continuing to challenge us.

Clearly Stricken

Peacefully taking in the carefully calculated morsels, pondering about the next moment when she would see his beautiful eyes, blue as the tone of her hands, she knew that it was just a matter of time before he would ask her to be his bride.

Ordinarily, she would not have eaten as much as she did, but the anticipation of a life with her love encouraged her interest in healthy eating and this meant that she would eat some morsels of chicken and an undressed salad; gagging on these morsels, she sighed and drank some water.

Usually her meals would consist of chicken broth and ice water, maybe an herb tea if her stomach rumbled, if she could feel this, a rare occurrence these days.

Noon time, the phone rang, and it was him; sitting in anticipation she twirled her beads and smiled, grinning, in fact, anticipating this would be the time he would ask her to meet for a special dinner date.

Disappointed, she learned that he had plans to be out of town for an extended period, then he let her know that it may, in fact, be several weeks before he came to town, then he said one more thing.

Selecting the best of choice meats, she carefully wrapped the precious cut in butcher paper and placed it in the freezer; this will be the one for him when he returns, she whispered to herself; placing her cup of iced water and chicken broth before her she began to sup, knowing she would have yet another difficult night of sleep.
