Writer Talk with Darls Centola as she talks about her debut memoir "Finding Truth with Michael" Prolific Pulse Press Podcast

Trauma therapist Darls Centola has written a unique, never-before-told story of young Michael Jackson and the relationship that changed both their lives, in FINDING TRUTH WITH MICHAEL: A Memoir of Friendship, Faith, and First Love, coming out on April 7th. Darls recounts her and Michael’s close, tender friendship forged during their time spent in a small, private high school in Los Angeles, where they held private Bible study sessions as teenage Jehovah’s Witnesses. Part memoir chronicling Darls’ and Michael’s secret friendship and spiritual bond as they both struggled under the weight of high-control religion, and part cultural lens, this book traces Centola’s path into—and eventually out of—an environment of high-control faith and spiritual abuse that shaped their lives. The memoir arrives amid a cultural shift toward understanding spiritual abuse, purity culture, and religious deconstruction. As a therapist, Centola has spent decades working with the complex impacts of adverse religious experiences and the restoration of personal sovereignty from authoritarian belief systems. As an author, she offers clarity, compassion, and an insider’s perspective on a rarely explored chapter in pop history. Centola would also love to discuss the intersection of celebrity, religious drama, and the clinical path to reclaiming one’s voice. About the author:Darls Centola is a licensed clinical social worker, educator, and EMDR consultant whose professional path has been shaped by the lived experiences explored in this memoir. She holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Hawaii and is based in Los Angeles, where she works as a trauma-informed therapist. Much of her work explores the impact of high-control belief systems and the process of reconnecting with self and self-trust.Learn more at http://www.findingtruthwithmichael.com

Short Fiction, six sentence story

Melanie Myers was a regular customer at the Ms Petite Boutique as they had clothing she preferred, simple, but stylish, not too overstated, but in fashion. Small in stature but a bit rounder than she cared to be, Melanie often felt overwhelmed when her usual size would fit snugly around her waist. “Oh, gee, it must be the last few days with all the events,” she would say, knowing this was not true, but she was too embarrassed to share that it was the chocolate eclairs with that perfect cream which kept her mind pre-occupied, although she did not imbibe in many, she had a hard time keeping her weight down.

As Melanie dragged home to her lovely apartment, she dropped her shopping bags and plopped in her easy chair, summoning Erika for some tea, she sat and pondered about what to do about her weight. At age 83, was she really caring if she gained a few pounds and what about the fact that they make clothes in larger sizes to accommodate her comfort. An epiphany struck her faster than Erika could bring her tea and grabbing her purse, she headed back out the door, to the Ms Petite Boutique to buy the prettiest outfit she could find in just the size that was comfortable for her frame, as she thought to herself, I deserve to live in comfort and I deserve those eclairs.

…..

The Archies who played a concert I attended in Iowa. That was many moons ago, and several chocolate eclairs.

Ten Things of Thankful – October 23 2020

Photo by Gopal Krishna on Unsplash

Happy Friday and TTOT day! No, I did not move to the desert, but I ran into the photo when I was working on a project and just love the colors. So, what’s happening on this week? A lot, I would say, so let’s get the party started!

  1. You know I am going to tell you how excited I am about tomorrow’s event and I am thankful that we are getting there without too many hiccups. And you know I have to share about it! So, here it is. Ya know…it’s virtual, right? hint hint What it is to be a Woman

2. Another poetry book has been edited and produced for LaVan Robinson. I posted about it HERE

3. The Prolific Pulse Poetry Podcast is going well. I am learning as I go and the important thing is to be open to new things and positive changes. I am grateful to be learning. It’s good to challenge the brain.

4. Daughter has received fabric and patterns and is making scarves and bunnies for folks who are in need. I am so proud and grateful. She is also making masks for folks.

5. Remote controls. What did we do before them? Oh yeah, get up or leave it on the same channel. Daughter’s remote took a dive and I think it has resulted in an appreciation for such devices.

6. Animal photos. I love to look at cute animal photos. In these days of news blasts and political mumbo jumbo, it’s nice to watch kittens and puppies and other critters having fun.

7. Bravery of a sweet soul with coming forth about abuse. I am grateful that they found the courage and they know they have the support.

8. The ability to pray and send positives to those in need. There has been an upswing in these requests and I am grateful that I am asked to do this. It means somebody believes I do what I am asked and I do.

9. A sense of humor. We all need a good laugh and I get tickled a lot by my friend, Missy and her blog Midlife Margaritas. She interviewed this comedian and I think it is worth sharing. Be sure to view the video. Another Hilarious Woman in Comedy: Meet Tara Brown

10. YOU! So, are you coming to the table this week, because we always have something good to serve up! Let’s see what you have in your covered dish.

Aruna Gurumurthy Poetry Reading

I am pleased to announce that Aruna Gurumurthy will be reading from her recently released book of poetry, published by Kelsay Books: Down the Grassy Aisles

This event co-sponsored by the North Carolina Writers Network will be a Zoom event on Saturday, October 24 as part of a two hour event from 10-noon ET Aruna will be reading from 10:15-!0:30. You can access the event via this link: Poetry Event

About the book

Down the Grassy Aisles is a collection of prose poems weaving through the richness of life and positivity. From dripping pink raincoats, to birthing courage, to dipping into the unknown, these poems are a fanciful splash of the tales of travel, joys of infancy, and subtlety of human emotion as the reader jumps over unseen realms of imagination.

Down the Grassy Aisles includes the title poem “Down the Grassy Aisles” which is a narrative of the morning walks I went on with my father in the grassy aisles of South Bombay (Now Mumbai). I draw the reader’s attention to the twists and turns, ups and downs of the poem as we meander through the green pastures, drinking chai, our “hmm’s” setting the tone of our brief convos as I breathe in his wisdom.
