Poet Talk with LaVan Robinson – Take 3

Writer Talk with Darls Centola as she talks about her debut memoir "Finding Truth with Michael" Prolific Pulse Press Podcast

Trauma therapist Darls Centola has written a unique, never-before-told story of young Michael Jackson and the relationship that changed both their lives, in FINDING TRUTH WITH MICHAEL: A Memoir of Friendship, Faith, and First Love, coming out on April 7th. Darls recounts her and Michael’s close, tender friendship forged during their time spent in a small, private high school in Los Angeles, where they held private Bible study sessions as teenage Jehovah’s Witnesses. Part memoir chronicling Darls’ and Michael’s secret friendship and spiritual bond as they both struggled under the weight of high-control religion, and part cultural lens, this book traces Centola’s path into—and eventually out of—an environment of high-control faith and spiritual abuse that shaped their lives. The memoir arrives amid a cultural shift toward understanding spiritual abuse, purity culture, and religious deconstruction. As a therapist, Centola has spent decades working with the complex impacts of adverse religious experiences and the restoration of personal sovereignty from authoritarian belief systems. As an author, she offers clarity, compassion, and an insider’s perspective on a rarely explored chapter in pop history. Centola would also love to discuss the intersection of celebrity, religious drama, and the clinical path to reclaiming one’s voice. About the author:Darls Centola is a licensed clinical social worker, educator, and EMDR consultant whose professional path has been shaped by the lived experiences explored in this memoir. She holds a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Hawaii and is based in Los Angeles, where she works as a trauma-informed therapist. Much of her work explores the impact of high-control belief systems and the process of reconnecting with self and self-trust.Learn more at http://www.findingtruthwithmichael.com

Short Fiction, short story, six sentence story

We Got This

“Great and marvelous are thy works, o Lord of hosts, almighty God…,” were the words flowing from Clarabelle as she sat beside Herbie’s hospital bed, he smiled and held her hand, listening to her angelic voice, much like the clink of the crystals hanging from the doorway, gentle, yet powerful.

“He’s going to be just fine, ma’am, he just had a little stress, but his heart checked out fine,” the doctor patted Herbie on the shoulder, “now, you do need to stop that smoking, it’s only fair of me to mention, as it is slowing you down,” Herbie nodded and looked over at Clarabelle and winked.

The doctor left the room, Clarabelle looked in her husband’s eyes and held his hand, “you know, honey, it’s important to listen to what the doctor said, I, uh,” tears rolled down her cheeks and Herbie’s eyes watered.

Squeezing his wife’s hand, Herbie spoke, through choked back tears, “Clair, we are going to do this together, I know what I need to do and as hard as it is gonna be, it’s gotta be done,” to which Clarabelle nodded and arose from her seat.

“Many are called for great things, love, and you were called to be with me and while I am not a great thing, I need to tell you, I need you in my life, Herbie, and there’s no two ways about it, I marvel at God’s gift to us, and sure don’t want to take it for granted.”

Often, Herbie thought his wife should start preaching, because her words would stick with him better than any person at the pulpit, reaching for her hand, he gave it a squeeze, “honey, we have this covered, no matter what, and that is that, you are the greatest thing to ever happen to me.”

Good Morning and Happy Friday and TTOT day! Well, it doesn’t have to be today, but to get the party started I already inserted the above blue bar in case you want to get a running start to join in! Let’s get to it!

  1. Notice the picture of the cabin in the woods? Well, that’s not mine. And as much as I love the pictures of the pretty snow, I am not seeing any and I am grateful, because I like to see the roads stay clear. However, if I were in that cabin, looking out at the snow, having ability to write, and having hot foods and drinks to sip, I would not be ungrateful. So, there’s that.
  2. I received approval for my injection so expect that to happen on Thursday. So, that is the injection for my knee and I am very grateful.
  3. Many of you know that I am putting together an anthology of poetry. I am happy to report that the edits are done, just waiting on a handful of people to confirm all looks okay. I am grateful that people have been quick to get back to me.
  4. I learned a much needed new skill and I am grateful for YouTube videos. I suppose I should give credit to the person who created the video, as well. Otherwise, I would be continuing to have much confusion.
  5. Coupons from the drug store for being a loyal customer helped pay for a good portion of my big purchase yesterday.
  6. Grocery pick up options when it’s just too hard to manage navigating the store. And friendly, helpful people who bring them to the car.
  7. Poetry Critique group from Living Poetry helps me to improve my work and I am so grateful for such a nice group of people.
  8. My helper/daughter when grocery shop. She insists on managing the trunk placement and helps carry and put things away. She used to bag groceries for her job as is very good at this skill.
  9. Neighbors who are quiet.
  10. YOU! So, tell us what’s up with you!
