When I took a poetry class last year, we studied one of Gwendolyn Brooks poems: We Real Cool. This was followed by a Meetup when she was the featured Pulitzer Prize winning poet. She was also the first black woman to be named Poet Laureate of the United States. Brooks wrote over 20 books of poetry as well as other works, including  a novel.

For Dead Poets Live I would like to devote the prompt focus on the works of Brooks.

Here is a link to tell you more about Brooks. Gwendolyn Brooks Biography

Following are some of my favorite Brooks poems:

The Bean Eaters

We Real Cool

The Lovers of the Poor

Ten Things of Thankful – January 29 2021

Photo by Kyle Roxas on Pexels.com

Happy Friday and TTOT!! Let’s slide right into a beautiful day!

  1. Grateful to see a little snow, just a little and enough to go aww
  2. I got my knee injection yesterday. It takes about 4 weeks to work. And I am grateful to have it and that it doesn’t take longer to start working. It used to be a whole lot different where you had to have a series of these shots and they were very painful. This ones was not bad. Yes, I did some breathwork to get through it, but it was not as bad as I thought it would be. My friend virtually held my hand. Thank you Wendy.
  3. Grateful to have a car.
  4. Grateful for stories to help me sometimes escape and sometimes sort things out.
  5. Grateful for kindness. When someone is kind it makes all the difference. I noticed that my orthopedic doctor’s office staff all smile with their eyes and do all they can to help. I even had one call me to assure me she could take care of my scheduling needs.
  6. Grateful for the ability to buy healthy food.
  7. Grateful for the support of those who subscribed to my YouTube channel so that more poets can be seen and heard.
  8. Grateful that my plans for Saturday will be fulfilled.
  9. Grateful that I have a heated blanket.
  10. YOU! I am thankful for you. How about you share with Jerry the Giraffe about your thankfuls…

Positive Results

“He came across the ocean, I suppose you could say,” Clarabelle explained to her friend, Shandy, “that’s how I met Herbie, a proud man of the Navy, you know they really do remain close, after all these years, Herbie’s old crew still keeps me up on the latest news about their lives; when I lost Herbie, those fellows could not do enough for me,” and both ladies had pools of tears welling up.

“Oh, that makes me think of my own love, the one that got away; he wasn’t in the Navy, but his work called him away quite often and he was hard to reach. You know I said he’s the one that got away, but I sent him away. He was nice enough, but he had one problem, he was already married and did not give me that detail until I found out on my own.”

Patting Shandy’s hands, Clarabelle sat beside her, in her lounger, “Shandy, dear, there are plenty of roads we choose in life and plenty of roads that get chosen for us. I like to look at the results more than the process,  because the results are what we live with, and I like to think that my results are amazing. And look at us, if I had not been so overwhelmed that day in the diner, we may have never become friends, and I like those results.”

Cookies, Cookies, Cookies!!!

Now that I have your attention… I am excited to share that my friend and fellow blogger, Deanna Martinez has a new cookbook coming out and it is all about COOKIES!!!

Deanna tells about it in her blog post: Family History and traditions with Author Deanna Martinez-Bey

OKAY! Maybe I am spoiled because I already have Deanna’s Cheesecake cookbook…so there is that…

Here’s what I like about Deanna’s recipes:

They are easy to follow

The ingredients are practical

The recipes are created by someone who has proven herself in the food world

So…you might want to check out her new book:

This is totally voluntary and I am not even getting cookies for telling about it…at least, I don’t think I am…”Oh…Deanna…!”
