Autumn and SAD

Autumn brings a change
when darkness comes too early
life can take a turn
SAD comes forth with depression
pleasures once known may be gone
sleeping may be more
energy waning, despite
dozing throughout night
slowing down movements and speech
restlessness, pacing, wringing
feeling less than worth
guilt taking over a life
concentration’s hard
forget making decisions
leaving feels as an option
it may start out young
but age is not the factor
more importantly
getting help is what matters

Stay Strong

even under stress
sands will hold force together
appearances skewed

Keep Hoping

erosion beckons
foundations shaking hold on
facing certain hope

Awareness Comes

tides will come and go
washing up the new and old
bringing forth new thoughts

The Send Off
a haibun

Preparing poems for a manuscript is a daunting experience. Just when you think they are all ready to send, you take that last look and there you see it. One has a stain on his shirt, she has jelly circling her mouth, an untied shoe, a shirt not tucked in and so it goes. Back to putting the kids in order and making sure they do nothing to embarrass you. There will be one who belches and is rather proud of it and another who gets gassy and lets everybody know in more ways than one. Alas… as soon as everything is in good form and functional and relatable and all the other ables you put them in the minivan and take them off to deliver them to the judges, experts, or whoever has devoted never enough time to look them over. I just hope that they behave while not under my watch. Somehow, I trust they will, but oh my I hope that chili last night didn’t stir things up. Such is the life of a poet, preparing the way for her children to have a review. Wish us all lots of luck!

For the Bahamas – A Tanka

For the Bahamas

for the Bahamas

tides have come and gone and yet

so much to be done

placing feet in their wet shoes

spirits trudge forward in hope

keeping it mindful

taking stock of what’s to do

bringing up courage

there’s really no other way

but to fight for making home

starting all over

is hard enough to battle

keep in mind the loss

hold their spirits in the heart

what can old souls do in life

but be a part of all

taking account of life’s toll

one moment to next

one small step to create change

keeping the faith going strong
