  1. Old-fashioned

Wrote letters and stuffed them down a vase

imagining its flowers to be stargate portals

    to unknown peoples, their worlds

    pleasantly perfumed, welcoming

because they have all the nice things to say

some fine scribbles on their petals

    some encryption in their whorls

    because someone wrote to me

in an alien script no one reads on earth

    I wrote back to them

    in inadequate words

    trying an inversely proportional kindness

    sobbing to sleep

    waiting desperately for their replies
