It was a dark and stormy night. No, it wasn’t. It was late night, though, when my writer pal, Anu Anniah, a night owl like me, messaged me about joining a platform for women called Garden of Neuro. Given my packed life, I wasn’t sure of getting into yet another venture. However, I joined, and am I glad.

Susan Brearley has created a safe, peaceful space for women to express their creativity, and I found myself getting published in a Safe and Brave Space, an Anthology of Poems and Art, within weeks. I was amazed at the speed and grace with which the intrepid Lisa Tomey led us through the process.

Then Susan and the ideator, Nanci Arvizu, seasoned veterans of Medium, started talking to me about creating a Blogging course. I blog on WordPress, and was glad to use my instructional design and facilitation background to create a…

Carmen chose her bracelet and made a list of charms

Her list grew far too long, yet her desires did not wane

After she completed her list, she handed it to him.

Ready to please her, he ran up his card to the max.

Moments passed and she decided that she wanted more.

She wrote a list and he took one look before he left evermore.

The Gift

She grabbed a box and placed clothes, clean and neatly folded, for someone who could use them.

Each piece held meaning. Gentle shades of blue with striped rompers, cream colored bibs with embroidered farm animals, the kind he’d love to see.

She touched each piece again, catching her tears with the back of her hand.

She picked up the phone and called Halbert, the junk man, and asked him to stop by to pick up charity.

Halbert knew this was not the same as tossed out junk, as he not long ago picked up the baby furniture for Miss Maize, who also gifted him a real apple pie.

Where have all the odd ones gone?

This piece was written for the Six Sentence Challenge, with the prompt word of ‘reserve’.

When Alfie Centauri announced that he’d discovered where in the universe all the odd socks that disappeared in the weekly wash ended up, the responses from the public were culturally diverse (which of course was much to the satisfaction of ‘woke’ people) and tinged with a sense of reserve.

Hipsters said they never had that problem because they’d given up wearing them years ago to concentrate on growing beards and opening barista bars, where they could converse at length with customers about the quality of the crema and the impeccable FairTrade credentials of their beans.

App developers in Silicon Valley didn’t stop working on ways to embed cheap computer chips in socks so that they could always be tracked down, just like FindMyPhone, using a new technology called FoxMySox.
